The ballots are in, the votes have been tallied and we're pretty sure a ransomware attack had nothing to do with the results (see, we can be topical).
Without further ado, meet your elected 2017-2018 AAF-KC board and Ad 2 & Art+Copy Club councils!
AAF-KC Board of Directors
Rebecca Schwartz, Hallmark
Rebecca has been involved with AAF-KC in a variety of roles for the past 6 years, and has spent the past two years serving on the Board of Directors. She is currently the Vice President of Programs, where she helps with the strategic plan for our awesome calendar of events, and helps oversee event planning throughout the year. Previously, she was the Special Events Chair, with responsibility for the planning and execution of two of the club’s largest events, the AAF Central Region Conference and the Gas Can Creative Conference. Rebecca recently began working at Hallmark Cards as a Creative Recruiter, where she finds and hires top creative talent in the areas of design, writing editorial, photography, animation, and video. Prior to Hallmark, Rebecca spent over 5 years at LandaJob Marketing & Creative Talent as a Creative and Contract Recruiter. Outside of planning amazing advertising events and recruiting spectacular creative talent, Rebecca enjoys going to concerts, karaoke, Orangetheory, road trips, tattoos, and baking. She would love your vote to stay on the board and keep making great things happen for AAF-KC!
Ben Carmean, VML
Ben Carmean creative directs omnichannel campaigns, websites, apps and other advertising-like objects. Ben believes in not wasting time: not the client’s time, definitely not the consumer’s and — if anybody asks — his, preferably. That belief rings true for product development, copy, user interfaces and picking a place for lunch. Over nearly a decade at VML, Ben has launched work for such clients as Ford, Ford Credit, Lincoln, Tennessee Tourism, Cobra Golf, Puma Golf, Hotel Phillips and the Kansas City Royals. Previously, Ben served on the Ad 2 Council on Virtual Agency projects, produced so, so many corporate communications materials, developed an e-classroom UI for Kansas State University and sold popcorn at a movie theatre in Wichita.
Megan McClure, REACTOR Design Studio
A KC transplant from Huskerland USA, Megan has been involved in the ad community and AAF for the last few years. Starting off volunteering for Ad Wars, she moved into helping run the AAF Regional Conference in 2015 and then helping coordinate day-of happenings at the Gas Can conference. For work, Megan handles new business, social media and plans First Fridays at REACTOR Design Studio. For play, Megan can be found binging the latest Netflix fad show, working on her blogging skills or daydreaming about her next travel adventure with her husband. She is hoping to bring enthusiasm and a quality GIF or two to the AAF-KC board team.
Tom Apple, Woodruff
Tom Apple is no newcomer to the Kansas City ad community. His career includes stints at at Brewer (Y&R's first agency in KC), BR, Barkley, Stephens & Associates, Geoff Howe (now Grey) and a few other KC shops. For the last 8 years, Tom has been at Woodruff, serving as VP for a list of Fortune 500 companies across many different industries. He has served on committees for the KC Ad Club and NAMA, and has chaired past "Best of NAMA” Awards Shows. Tom’s love of “all things KC” has kept him here when opportunities outside our city came his way, and then there’s his undying loyalty and affection for KU sports (even football). Tom would be honored to serve on this year’s AAF-KC board and looks forward to the opportunity.
Julia Chasen Thompson, Bernstein-Rein
Since graduating from University of Kansas in 2014 and officially joining the Kansas City advertising community, Julia has grown her involvement with AAF-KC. She started out attending club events and has dived in to help further, including volunteering with Virtual Agency for the Midwest Music Foundation (2014-2015 client), volunteering as a co-chair for Spark KC in 2015 and, most recently, spearheading all AAF-KC email communication as the email co-chair responsible. Julia is currently a Senior Account Executive at Bernstein-Rein and is enthusiastic about the opportunity to increase her involvement with AAF-KC and the greater Kansas City advertising community.
Sara Sullivan, Bernstein-Rein
Sara recently joined Bernstein-Rein as Vice President, Client Engagement, focusing on agency growth and business development efforts. Throughout her career, Sara has been a key member of her agency team leading client work for brands such as Mastercard, Google Fiber, Pepsi International, Southern Comfort as well as multiple spirits for both Diageo and Moët Hennessy. Sara’s previous volunteer efforts have been focused on the arts, serving on the Nelson-Atkins Young Friends of Art board for five years and as co-chair of Party Arty. Although fairly new to the Kansas City advertising community, Sara is looking forward to the opportunity of being on the AAF-KC Board.
Ad 2 Council
Maggie Hylton, Sullivan Higdon & Sink
I have a passion for KC and its history, especially when it comes to advertising. From planning the KC AdMen event in 2015 to writing copy for Ad Wars and Wednesday Accelerations in 2016, I really feel like my involvement in Ad2 and AAF-KC has allowed me to both learn more about and be a part of that history. I’d love to broaden my involvement by running for the Ad 2 council this year. I’d also love to tell you I’m organized and enthusiastic, but I’ll let my color-coded spreadsheets do the talking.
Jordan Warren, GlynnDevins
Hey there, JW here. For the past 2 years, I’ve served Ad 2 KC as Communications Director, helping shape the branding, messaging and channel strategy for our community. Now, I need your vote. Because, well, I’m not done yet. As a Kansas City native, I love this community and have a passion to continue taking it to the next level. This ain’t no flyover country and we’re not settlers in any capacity – we strive for unforgettable events, inspiring speakers and kick-ass creativity. I want to continue serving on Ad 2 to bring you what you want. So, don’t stop me now … vote for me!
Ashley Kieffer, Barkley
Ashley moved to Kansas City two years ago. Fresh out of college, she searched for not only a full-time graphic design job, but a community to become a part of. She was quickly hired by Barkley and just as quickly pulled into the AAF-KC family. Since that point, Ashley has applied her design skills in many different ways. Her artistic hand helped brand the 2015 Spark KC student conference, 2016 Match KC intern speed-interviewing event, 2016 Ad 2 spring education event featuring VML's Amy Winger, 2017 American Advertising Awards show, and is currently working on the 2017 summer Ad Wars branding campaign. She's held numerous Ad 2 co-chair positions including Professional Development, American Advertising Awards, and is currently serving as the design co-chair for Ad Wars. When she's not working on Ad 2 stuff she manages to work full-time and do it well, having earned herself a 2017 Journey Awards Young Advertising Professional of the Year nomination. With her dedication to design and passion for event planning, she is eager to continue elevating the organization and the advertising community of Kansas City as a whole.
Lexi Glassman, Midland Radio
I just finished my first 2-year term on the Ad 2 KC Council. I started on membership development which involved volunteer coordination, student outreach, education and acquisition. The past year, I've been the social chair, organizing our monthly AdHops. I love being on the council because Ad 2 helped me start my career in Kansas City and anything I can do positively affect another person's experience, I’m happy to do it. This club gives me so many opportunities to do so and make real connections with incredible professionals and friends. AND we have a hella of a fun time!
Alan Schieber, emfluence
When Alan walked into his first AAF-KC event he didn’t know quite yet that he’d just found his home. Currently serving as the co-chair for AdWars and previously volunteering for Art of the Deal, Spark KC, and Match KC, Alan has been involved in all things Ad 2 this year. During the day Alan manages paid search, social, and display campaigns at emfluence, but after hours looks forward to using his passion and ambition for networking, event planning and digital advertising as an Ad 2 Board Member. Alan is particularly interested in applying his knowledge and experience in digital marketing to help Kansas City's Ad 2 chapter drive event attendance, foster engagement, and ultimately bring in more members.
Sarah Mason, Barkley
Sarah has been a member of Ad 2 for three years, and in that time volunteered for Virtual Agency for Happy Birthday Inc, Art of the Call and AAA's judging weekend. More recently she co-chaired Art of the Deal 2017. Sarah was born and bred in KC, and is excited to see how the city has come alive in recent years! She is currently a project manager at Barkley, but in her downtime can be found at a winery, checking out different restaurants around town or playing sand volleyball. She looks forward to taking it to the next level and bringing her talents and enthusiasm for advertising to the Ad 2 board.
Kirstie Mulligan, Northeast News
Kirstie has volunteered at and helped run many Ad 2, AAF-KC and Art+Copy events, including Art of the Call, Art of the Deal and AAA Judging. Most recently, she has contributed designs and input as a VA committee member the past two years and as a Student Development Co-Chair for this year’s Spark KC and Match KC events. As a Graphic Designer, she has done a little of everything, from organizing layouts to creating moonshine labels to taking photos of World Series rallies (ok just one for now). As an Ad 2 Council Member, she looks to continue volunteering wherever needed and attending every AdHops possible!
Taylor Lay, Lifted Logic
Hey there AAF-KC people! Let’s cut to the good stuff. I’m passionate about two things – learning and giving back. They actually go hand in hand nicely ! The more I know the more I can give back. That’s how I see Ad 2, an opportunity to do both. I'm a newbie to KC, but I signed up for Ad 2 the day after I joined Lifted Logic, my digital creative agency, as their content strategist. Shortly after, I volunteered for this year’s Virtual Agency to give back to KC Passages as their lead website/digital strategist to build a better functioning, long-lasting website. I’m one of those passionate, 111% in, go-getters adding an extra spice to Ad 2 to grow to a new level of influence.
Brandon Painter, Barkley
In Brandon’s year and a half of being involved with Ad 2 KC, he has served as Professional Development co-chair to help coordinate and amplify Spark KC, driving 115 registrants, 58 Speakers, 16 companies and 200 promotional bags filled with donations from local KC companies; Match KC that drew 45-50 students in to have micro-interviews with 20 of the city’s top agencies and two speaking events. Most recently, he has served as Communications co-chair helping complete a first-of-its-kind communications audit that will position the club to be successful and competitive for years to come. He also did stuff for Gas Can. And is currently serving on the Ad Wars committee.
Emily Mullett, Global Prairie
She has a cat, but the only thing crazy about Emily is her passion for design. Through her eye for color, her hand for typography, and her heart for concept, Emily has put her skills to good use at Hallmark, Carpenter Collective and most recently at Global Prairie as a Senior Designer. Emily strives to make everything she touches better — including our future, through her volunteer work for Lead to Read KC, where she reads with elementary school kids weekly to help improve literacy in nearby urban areas. Her perfect world would include lots of hand lettering, cereal and binge watching murder-mysteries with said cat, Winnie.
Staci Meyer, Sullivan Higdon & Sink
Staci put her info into the write-a-creative-bio-online-generator and this is what came out… Half scientist. Half artist. All writer. As Associate Creative Director at SHS, Staci has a passion for finding creatively strategic solutions for technical clients and mentoring up-and-coming ad stars. She’s been an on-again/off-again member of AAF for, well, quite a while, and enjoys flying under the radar when she’s not jumping her horse or obsessing about her gas mileage.
Laura Green, Barkley
Method. Madness. And when the time is right – a little bit of both. Laura’s background in project management helps her day to day as the director of creative operations at Barkley – and (she’s been told) has been beneficial in planning and helping with logistics on events such as Spark KC and Bulletproof (4/20, of course). Laura is back in her hometown of KC after a few years in SF and Boulder (and maybe a couple in college). She’s looking forward to the opportunity to help drive and guide logistics, and contribute to the growth and style of Art + Copy events as we know it – because creatives are her favoritest people. Like, ever.
